If you work more than 40 hours in a week, chances are you are supposed to be paid overtime. This is true no matter what your boss calls you and even if you are paid a ‘salary.’ You generally must be paid in money – not ‘comp time.’ The law is clear but it is also routinely violated by employers.
Cheating people out of overtime pay is a form of wage theft and, as this New York Times article points out, it is a growing problem.
